Tempered Glass Table Tops
It’s best to choose tempered glass for any kind of glass table top. Tempering means that the glass has been heat treated and cooled for extra durability. If a tempered glass table top is struck or broken, it will shatter into small, harmless pieces rather that large, sharp shards of glass. For a glass table cover, you wouldn’t really need to choose tempered glass, but it does add an extra layer of safety in case you were to drop something on your table.
Glass Edge Finishes
How you are going to use your glass table top will dictate the glass edge finishes that you use. Also, your edges will look slightly different on round table tops and square or rectangle tops, and even a little different depending on the corners that you choose. Below are some of the most common edge types.
Beveled edges are finished to be thinner at the edges. You can choose the width of the bevel you want when you are customizing your glass.Flat polished edges are ground down to be smooth and safe for you to use anywhere. Works well when glass is inset in a frame.Pencil polished edges are rounded for safety and a beautiful look. Looks especially nice when used as a surface protector or glass table cover.A seamed edge is sanded off lightly for when you need minimal finishing. Choose this type when you won’t see the edges of the glass.

Corner Finishes for Square and Rectangle Glass Tables

For square and rectangle table tops, you have the additional consideration of what type of corner finish you would like. Below are the three corner finishes we offer.
A simple eased corner is polished for safety and comfort. Our most popular corner option. You can choose which corners you would like to have this look.A radius corner can be used when covering a table that has similar corners, or when the glass is on a pedestal. You can choose the radius measurements and which corners you want to have this finish. Not available for beveled edges. This corner type can be used if you have a pedestal table and desire a decorative finish. You can customize the clip measurement and which corners you would like to be clipped.

How to Choose the Right Glass Table Top

Glass table tops can be used in three main ways: As a glass table cover (furniture protector), as a glass table topper on a pedestal, or as a glass insert that fits in a rim.

Glass Table Top Covers/Furniture Protectors

One popular use for glass table tops is to use the glass to protect the surface of a table, desk, coffee table or other furniture. When used as a cover on a wood surface, you can use a thinner glass such as 1/4". The edges of the glass are normally polished to smooth them out and avoid the possibility of injury from the sharp edges.
Recommendations for glass table covers:
  • Glass Thickness: 1/4" is the preferred thickness. 3/8" or 1/2"can be used for effect but make sure that the furniture can carry the weight.
  • Edge Type: Flat polish is the preferred edge work. However, pencil polish or beveled polish can be used for a unique effect.
  • Glass Strength: Annealed glass is sufficient to protect the table but glass can always be tempered for added safety, especially if there are younger kids in the house.

Glass that Sits on a Pedestal

Glass table tops can also be used when the surface is made only of glass that is supported by a pedestal. The support can be made of glass, wood, metal, or any other material. In these instances, the glass has to be tempered for safety reasons.
Recommendations for glass that sits on a pedestal:
  • Glass Thickness: Please choose 3/8" or 1/2" glass. Thinner glass is not recommended in these cases.
  • Edge Types: Flat polish, pencil polish, or beveled polish edges are all acceptable. This is an option where you are in complete control and you can choose the look and the effects you want for your glass furniture.
  • Glass Strength: Tempered glass is recommended for added safety and strength.

Glass Embedded in a Frame

For a glass table top where the glass sits in a metal frame, such as a patio table top, it can be a little tricky to get the exact glass you'll need. If you need to replace broken glass that sits inside a metal frame, please straighten the frame before you measure for the glass you need. We will fabricate the glass exactly to the dimensions you provide with a 1/8" cutting tolerance.
Recommendations for when glass embedded in a table or wrapped in metal frame:
  • Glass Thickness: 1/4", 3/8" or 1/2", depending on the table. Follow the table manufacturer's recommendations if at all possible.
  • Edge Types: Seamed edge or flat polished edge. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations or go by what was used with the table before if you are replacing something that is broken.
  • Glass Strength: Tempered glass is recommended for added safety and strength.

How to Replace Table Top Glass

Broken glass tables are a bummer, but we have everything you need to get the perfect glass table top replacement. When you’re ordering glass for table tops, there are a few things you need to remember:
  1. Choose a Shape: Round glass table tops are very common, but square and rectangle glass table tops are just as popular. First choose the shape of glass you need.
  2. Measure: Getting the right table top glass replacement is easy. Simply measure the width and length and enter them when you are placing your order. For a round glass table top, you need only one number - the distance across the table, measured through the center. This is called the diameter.
  3. Customize: Custom glass for table tops is our specialty! During this step, you can choose tempered glass table top replacements, or choose from a variety of edge types (beveled, pencil polish, flat), tints, and more. Rounded corners or holes in the center are not a problem!
